CTuH2 - Workforce Investment in the Future: A Mentorship Program for Newly Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) - P2P NETWORKING SESSION

Session Description: Jessie Trice Community Health System (JTCHS) has school-based clinics within forty Miami-Dade County public schools. Due to a critical nursing shortage of licensed practical nurses, JTCHS entered a collaborative partnership with local Nursing Schools, to foster a supportive and skilled nursing workforce. Internships are offered to practical nursing students within our primary care clinics. Allowing practical nurses internships throughout their school year of training in pediatrics, adult care, and obstetrics and gynecology gives JTCHS the opportunity to assess the student’s performance. Once the student successfully completes the practical nurse program and passes state boards, JTCHS can offer the newly licensed practice nurse (LPN) a job opportunity in the school-based health program.
Mentorship Program for Newly Licensed Practical Nurses: The 12-week program provides orientation and pairs the newly hired licensed practical nurses with experienced nurses to support their integration into the school-based program. Key components include hands-on clinical training in patient communication strategies, workload management, and compliance education. Additionally, the program emphasizes pediatric care, health promotion, and disease prevention to align with the needs of school-aged populations. Biweekly assessments and peer support meetings provide continuous feedback.
